Fresh blown-in insulation after removal
Why remove it?

Adding more on top just buries the problem

After 15 to 20 Florida summers, insulation is usually flattened, patchy, stained by old roof leaks or full of rodent droppings. Blowing new material over it keeps all of that above your ceiling, next to your air handler and ductwork.

Taking it out gives us a clean, empty space. That means we can actually see the problems, seal the air leaks properly and put fresh insulation in at an even, full depth.

  • Removes dust, droppings and odors at the source
  • Exposes hidden leaks, wiring and pest entry points
  • New insulation performs like it should
Key benefits

Why homeowners choose removal

It's more than a clean-up. Here's what changes once the old insulation is gone.

01

Cleaner indoor air

Old insulation holds dust, allergens and debris that leaky ceilings pull into your home. Removing it and sealing the leaks stops that at the source.

02

No more musty smells

That stale, musty smell is often old, damp or contaminated insulation. Out it goes, and the space is sanitized before anything new goes in.

03

Hidden problems exposed

With the old material gone we can see roof leaks, damaged wiring, crushed ducts and pest entry points, and photograph everything for you.

04

Rodent mess gone

Droppings, nesting and tunnels are removed with the insulation, the space is sanitized, and we can seal up how pests were getting in.

05

Air leaks sealed properly

A clean attic floor means we can seal around lights, top plates, hatches and duct boots before fresh insulation covers them again.

06

Lower bills, cooler rooms

Fresh, full-depth insulation over a sealed ceiling keeps heat out, so your AC runs less and hot rooms finally keep up.

How it works

Insulation removal, step by step

Most homes take one to three days from start to finish, depending on size and what we find.

  1. 1

    Free inspection and price

We inspect your attic or roof space, take photos, check depth and condition, and run a blower door test. You get a clear recommendation and a written price on the day.

  2. 2

    Prep and protect

We lay floor runners and cover the route to the attic, and set up our removal equipment outside. Your home stays clean.

  3. 3

    Remove the old insulation

A commercial insulation vacuum pulls the old material through a hose straight into sealed bags outside. Nothing gets carried through your home.

  4. 4

    Inspect and sanitize

With the space empty, we check wiring, ducts, the roof deck and pest entry points, photograph what we find, then clean and sanitize.

  5. 5

    Seal the air leaks

Gaps around lights, top plates, hatches and duct boots are sealed with the blower door running, so we can see the leakage number drop.

  6. 6

    Re-insulate

Fresh insulation goes in at the right depth for Florida, with baffles at the eaves. Usually blown-in, with spray foam or a radiant barrier where it makes sense.

  7. 7

    Walk-through and clean-up

We re-test, show you before and after photos, answer your questions and leave the place tidier than we found it.

Insulation removal FAQ

Your questions, answered

Straight answers to what people ask us most about insulation removal.

Why remove old insulation instead of just adding more?
Because new insulation laid over old, dirty or compressed material inherits its problems. Dust, droppings and odors stay above your ceiling, and the air leaks underneath get buried where nobody can seal them. Removal lets us start clean, seal properly and install fresh insulation at full depth.
How do I know if my insulation needs to be removed?
Common signs are rooms that never cool down, high summer bills, musty smells, dust and allergies, signs of rodents, past roof leaks, and insulation that looks flat, patchy or matted. If your home is 15+ years old and nobody has touched the attic, it's worth a look. Our free inspection will tell you for sure, with photos.
Can old insulation affect my indoor air quality?
Yes. Leaky ceilings pull attic air into your living space, and with it dust, fibers, allergens and odors from old or contaminated insulation. One of our customers told us their allergies cleared up after a full attic restoration. Removing the old material and sealing the leaks tackles the problem at the source.
How do you remove the old insulation?
With a commercial insulation vacuum. The old material is pulled through a large hose from the attic straight into sealed bags outside, so nothing is carried through your home.
Is insulation removal messy?
Not inside your home. We protect the route to the attic with floor runners and covers, the removal hose runs outside, and we clean up thoroughly before we leave. Customers regularly mention how clean we leave things.
Do I need to leave the house?
Usually not. Most people carry on as normal while we work. We'll let you know before the job if there's any reason to plan around us, for example if we're spraying foam.
How long does insulation removal take?
Most homes take one to three days for the full job: removal, sanitizing, air sealing and new insulation. Bigger homes, very deep or contaminated insulation, or lots of air sealing can take a little longer. We'll give you a timeline with your quote.
What types of insulation can you remove?
We remove loose-fill (blown-in) fiberglass and cellulose, plus batts and rolls. If we find vermiculite, which can contain asbestos, we won't disturb it. It needs to be tested and handled by a licensed specialist first, and we'll explain your options.
What happens after the old insulation is removed?
We inspect and photograph the empty space, sanitize it, seal the air leaks with the blower door running, then install fresh insulation at the right depth with baffles at the eaves. Finally we re-test, walk you through the results and clean up.
What insulation do you put back in?
It depends on your home and budget. Usually it's blown-in fiberglass or cellulose (including borate-treated cellulose, which helps deter pests), installed to Florida's recommended depth. In some homes spray foam or a radiant barrier makes more sense. We'll talk you through the options and price points.
Can you remove insulation from just part of the attic?
Sometimes, for example where one area was damaged by a roof leak. But if the rest is old or contaminated too, doing it all at once is usually better value and gives you even coverage. We'll tell you honestly which makes sense.
Does removal help with rodents?
It removes the droppings, nesting and contaminated insulation, and the space is sanitized afterwards. We also look for how they got in so the entry points can be sealed. Removal alone won't stop new pests, so sealing those entry points matters.
How do you dispose of the old insulation?
It's bagged on site straight from the vacuum and hauled away by us. You don't have to deal with any of it.
How much does insulation removal cost?
It depends on the size of the space, how deep and how contaminated the old insulation is, and what goes back in. That's why we inspect first. You'll get a clear, written price on the day of your free inspection, with no pressure to decide.

We were in the market for insulation but weren't sure which kind to get. Heat Hunters was the only company to both offer a full diagnostic and to carry all insulation types. They went over all the options with us with different price points and we decided to remove the old dirty stuff, sanitize the attic, seal up the holes in the attic floor, put in baffles, and install cellulose treated with borates to keep pests away.

My wife and I are really impressed and feel like it was money well spent. Plus, our energy bill is already so much lower. This will clearly pay for itself. But the big plus is we can finally sleep through the night in our master! Go with these guys. They're good people and they're all extremely passionate. Very fair pricing too.

My wife and I have had pretty bad allergies since moving into this house in Florida. We met Danny at a trade show and he told us it might be because of dirty attic air coming into our living area. I was skeptical but had him over to check for air leaks and inspect the attic.

I was genuinely shocked at all the leaks he found and how nasty the attic was. I had no idea all my can lights in the ceiling were leaking so much. We had them do a full attic restoration and they got rid of all the old nasty insulation, disinfected, sealed up our ducts, and sealed up the attic floor before adding new insulation. They even installed some metal mesh around the house so rodents wont get in.

Believe it or not our allergies are not acting up at all anymore! I'm excited to see how much lower this next electric bill is too. Very happy. Thanks guys

Danny and his team were fantastic with helping us removing our existing insulation, air sealing, and replacing with new insulation. From the first call and visit, Danny took the time to answer questions, did the blower door test, and explained why the service was needed without pressuring us. He's full of integrity and knowledgeable when it comes to this subject and more. The guys were supposed to do the work for 2 days, but there were minor hiccups (my house had more canned lights than expected, which Danny had to order more covers). He ordered them expeditiously and had them the next morning. The team worked extremely hard for 3 days in the hot attic. I had to leave the house for a prior engagement and you know what I saw on my security cameras? Danny was sweeping the garage and picking up every piece of scraps in the driveway. Then he also rinsed down any dirt from the company's truck. These guys went above and beyond and I could not recommend them highly enough. They were always in constant communication and always focused on getting things done correctly. With the rain being gone and it's getting hot again, we're already feeling more comfortable in our house. If you have any doubt, take this comment and just do it. Thanks Danny and team!

I found Danny on Google, who is the one winning so many positive reviews! Danny came to do the estimate and offered a good deal. Today I just had my insulation project done. I would strongly recommend Danny's Heat Hunters Insulation. They spent one day to clean out all the old insulation and disinfected the attic, and the second day to install new insulation, 13 inches thick! The new radiant barriers are new materials that can efficiently block the heat from the roof. Two workers took an extra day to install radiant barriers. They made everything look much better than before. I am super satisfied with their work. Danny deserves all the good praise and respect.

I was absolutely blown away by how thorough the initial inspection was. Danny spent over an hour looking at my gas water heater, the AC, the attic, and then doing that crazy blower door test! I can't believe I hadn't heard of that test sooner. I KNEW my house had to have been wasting cold air...I just didnt realize how bad it was. Such an eye opener. And I didnt think i could have so much fun learning about heat and "building science" (that's a new one for me). My wife and I learned more about our home from Heat Hunters in 2 hours than we have in the last 5 years from several different HVAC companies.

We were excited to move forward and we are so glad we did. It feels amazing in here and it's so refreshing to deal with a company who gives a damn and treats you like royalty. The install crew was so polite to us and respectful of our space. They came in and laid down tarp over our carpeting and put plastic on our walls while they explained the plan. They removed the old insulation and cleaned up and then sprayed closed foam in our attic. We felt so safe with all of the testing they did throughout the process, and with the awesome communication. I can't thank these guys enough. Everyone should have their heat hunted by the Heat Hunters!

Questions

Frequently asked questions

Why remove old insulation instead of adding more on top?

Old insulation is often flattened, patchy, damp or contaminated with dust and rodent waste. Piling new material on top buries those problems and blocks access to the air leaks underneath. Removing it lets us sanitize, seal the leaks properly, then re-insulate on a clean base, so you get the full benefit of the new insulation.

What happens at the free attic inspection?

A Heat Hunters tech checks your attic, insulation and AC, takes photos of what's up there and walks you through them. You get clear options and same-day pricing. If nothing needs doing, we'll tell you.

What's a blower door and why do your installers use it?

A blower door is a powerful fan fitted into a doorway that depressurizes the house. While it runs, air rushes through every hidden crack, which makes leaks easy for our crew to find and seal. The reading drops as leaks are closed, so we know the air sealing is working.

How long does removal and re-insulation take?

It depends on the size and condition of your attic. You'll get a clear timeline with your quote, and we work around your schedule.

What types of homes do you work on?

Homes with an attic: single-family homes, townhomes, side-by-side duplexes and mobile homes. For businesses, see our commercial spray foam services.
